Ionica Smeets

Ionica Smeets (1979) is a mathematician who has been professor of science communication at Leiden University since July 2015. She also works as an independent science journalist, writes columns for De Volkskrant and she presents the VPRO television program De Nationale Wetenschapsquiz. Together with Jeanine Daems she started the popular and prize-winning weblog Mathematics Girls in 2006, which got a regular feature in De Volkskrant in 2010. Smeets has written several books: most recently Superlogisch – How numbers help you understand the world better (Uitgeverij Nieuwezijds, 2019). There is also a snail named after her: the abida secale ionicae.
