Isabel Allende
Isabel Allende (1942) is one of the most read and loved writers in the world. The success of the Chilean started with her first magical-realistic novel The House with the Spirits (1982), which she initially wrote as a letter to her dying grandfather. Since then, more than twenty-three well-received novels of her hand have been published, including Love and Shadow (1984), Paula (1994), The Japanese lover (2015) and n the Midst of Winter (2017), each of which has been published in Dutch by Wereld Bibliotheek. In her books, Allende often interweaves fictional narratives with historical events. Allende’s latest book, A Long Petal of the Sea, which was published early this year, is about two refugees after the Spanish civil war. “Allende at her best,” according to the NRC.
