Édouard Louis published his debut novel, the autobiographical bestseller The End of Teddy (En finir avec Eddy Bellegueule), in 2014. This novel made him become world-famous in one fell swoop. In 2018Who Killed My Father (Qui a tué mon père) came out, an exceptional indictment of the French state and a moving profession of love of a son to his decrepit father. Director Ivo van Hove is a fan and made the production Wie heeft mijn vader vermoord (September 23 and 24 in Stadsschouwburg Utrecht). He is also adapting the new book for the theatre. This summer Combats et métamorphoses d’une femme was published, a harsh and honest account about the liberation of a woman – his mother – from the grip of men. Soon, the conversations between Édouard Louis and the famous British filmmaker Ken Loach (I, Daniel Blake and Sorry We Missed You) will be published in one volume. The two artists, each from their own discipline and generation (Louis and Blake are half a century apart in age), discuss societal issues such as poverty, class differences and worker’s rights, themes that are prevalent in their work.
On September 25th, Édouard Louis will be interviewed by writer and sociologist
Sinan Çankaya.
Actor and theatermaker Florian Myer gives a eulogy for Édouard beforehand.
NB Combine your visit to the ILFU Book Talk with Édouard Louis Saturday evening with the Exploring Stories event on Saturday afternoon. A combination ticket for the afternoon and evening is € 32,50 instead of €45. As long as stocks last.
