ILFU Book Talk: Isabel Allende

Isabel Allende is one of the most read and loved writers in the world. Her great success came immediately with her first novel from 1982, The House with the Ghosts, filmed with Meryl Streep in the lead role. Since then she has written more than 20 bestsellers and sold more than 74 million books. During this online ILFU Book Talk we will talk to her about her rich oeuvre and her latest novel A Long Petal of the Sea, which was published earlier this year.

Allende’s latest novel A Long Petal of the Sea is a compelling, historical and political story that begins in the late 1930s and is set against the background of two civil wars. In the late 1930s, a young doctor and his girlfriend flee the Spanish Civil War on a ship chartered by the Chilean poet Pablo Neruda (the novel is named after his words), thus escaping World War II. After they have built a new life in Chile, they are forced to leave their homes when the dictatorship breaks out there.

About Isabel Allende

In addition to her work as a writer, Isabel Allende devotes much of her time to human rights organizations and founded a foundation after the death of her daughter Paula, about whom she wrote the moving book of the same name. The foundation makes contributions to dozens of organizations worldwide, mainly focused on the well-being of women and girls. She also held several TED Talks that were watched by more than 8 million people. In 2014, she was awarded the Presidential Medial of Freedom, the highest U.S. civilian honor, by President Barack Obama.
